🏎 Member Spotlight: From the Track to the Training Field — Meet Paul, Our National Karting Champion
At Manchester Outdoor Fitness, we love celebrating our members’ achievements — especially when they push themselves to the limit both on and off the field.
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Paul, one of our longest-serving members and now the 100 National British Karting Champion! His story is one of passion, discipline, and pure determination — proving that consistency in training pays off far beyond the workout.

🏁 About the Race
Paul races in the Retro Racer National Historic Karting Series, competing in the 100 National class — a category for karts and engines made before 1992, the same machines he raced as a teenager.
“The competition is intense with several younger drivers and older hands like me. Usually about 15–20 of us in a race. Although it’s supposed to be fun, when the helmet goes on and the visor goes down — everyone wants to win!”
Karting at this level isn’t your average indoor fun track — these karts are serious machines capable of over 70 mph and pulling up to 2 Gs in corners. It’s an adrenaline-fueled, physically demanding sport that requires elite-level strength, control, and endurance.
🏆 Sealing the Championship
After six grueling rounds, Paul clinched the championship at the final race of the year.
“It was a long, hard year, and we only fully sealed the championship at the last race. To be 100 National British Champion is amazing — dream come true stuff. We won five out of six rounds and were pushed all the way.”
It wasn’t just his skill on the track that earned the title — it was the hours of preparation, both on the kart and in training sessions.
“We had to work hard for it, on and off the track — hours of equipment prep and lots of burpees and running too! I really learned the power of teamwork this year. I had a great team backing me, including Graham at BMF.”

💪 Why Manchester Outdoor Fitness?
Paul joined us way back in 2005, making him one of our longest-standing members.
“I wanted something different to a sterile gym. I loved the disciplined, structured military approach to training that keeps you ‘proper fit’ all year round. Gyms never gave me that push — I wanted to be motivated and outdoors.”
Nearly 20 years later, Paul still shows up week after week — rain, shine, or mud.

🔥 How Training Translates to Karting
Racing karts at 70 mph demands core stability, neck strength, arm endurance, and mental focus. Every lap — just 40 seconds long — needs to be within 0.1 to 0.2 seconds of the last. There’s no room for fatigue.
“Karting is about core, neck and lower arm strength plus the cardio fitness to maintain consistency. You can’t afford to get tired! Training outdoors, especially through winter, toughens you up physically and mentally.”

🏋️ Favourite Exercises
When asked which MOF workouts give him the biggest advantage on the track, Paul didn’t hesitate:
“Burpees are number one, obviously! But also press-ups, planks, shoulder taps, tricep dips, and squat thrusts — they build strength without adding unnecessary bulk. Doing high-impact floor work mixed with runs keeps my heart and lungs working hard — perfect for racing younger guys 25 years younger than me!”
🧠 Focus, Mindset, and Routine
“Working on fitness consistently for 20 years has kept me younger than my years. It gives you confidence knowing you’re fitter than the competition. It’s also my stress release — it balances me mentally and keeps me feeling strong.”
Before race weekends, Paul focuses on recovery, good food, and sleep:
“I don’t train too hard leading up to a race. I eat properly, get early nights, and avoid unnecessary stress. Staying relaxed gives me more energy at the track.”
👥 The Power of Community
Despite being a self-described “lone wolf,” Paul values the camaraderie of training with the MOF crew:
“Partnering up helps — you encourage each other through it. Whether you feel good or rubbish, there’s always someone to learn from. Everyone’s friendly, genuine, and there to work hard — no egos or drama.”
“Seeing everyone put a shift in every week keeps you accountable. The group gives you motivation to turn up and push yourself.”
🚀 What’s Next?
Just when he thought he might retire on a high, his team boss had other ideas…
“I was thinking it’s about time I hung my boots up, but then the team boss said, ‘No — you’re racing gearbox karts next year!’ So now I’m learning to drive even faster, heavier karts that go over 95 mph! My goal is to get even fitter over the winter with MOF.”
💡 Final Thoughts & Advice
“Even when I haven’t been racing, I’ve always made the effort to train because you just feel better every day. Motivation comes and goes, especially in winter, but you never regret turning up and putting the work in. Training teaches discipline — to crack on through when it’s tough — and you always get something positive out of it.”
